Michael Cooper (formerly O’Rourke) is a life sciences and biotech lawyer who grew up on the Peninsula. He went to UCLA for undergraduate where he studied English, and Santa Clara University School of Law where he studied health care law along with his JD.

Michael is a proud husband to a community pediatrician and educator, and they are both absolutely loving their roles being dads to their daughter who they welcomed to the world in 2024!  Michael is a passionate advocate for LGBTQIA+ issues and broader community issues in San Mateo County, deeply committed to inclusivity and equality. Michael has volunteered previously as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) in San Francisco County, providing mentoring and advocacy for children in the foster care system. Through this role, Michael developed a profound understanding of the challenges faced by vulnerable populations and the importance of creating visibility as well as safe, supportive environments for those in need. In his free time, he enjoys movies, cooking, scuba diving, and reading. 

As a Commissioner, Michael commits to always listen to the needs of the community and to tirelessly serve the public with a strong sense of duty and compassion.
